Cleansing the favelas before the World Cup

The police in Rio seem very busy at the moment, says the Daily Mail on May 3rd, as they're trying to make sure all is in place for the World Cup starting on June 12th.

Complaints have been raised by Amnesty International about the huge amount of force being developed in a joint effort to crack down on crime before the international media turn their eyes on to Brazil.

Not long ago, ending on April 23th according to the BBC, a wave of violence was shaking the central Rio de Janeiro favela, or shanty town, 2 minutes away from the touristic beaches.

Rocked by violence between locals and riot police, the protests broke out following the death of a young man allegedly beaten by police, Douglas Rafael da Silva Pereira.
